Super Special #5: California Girls!

Bringing out the big guns today - this is one of my all-time favorites. I was ready to claim it was my number one, but then realized that I should NOT be rash about this. However, this outfit makes a strong case for itself.

"You never knew what kind of outfit or hairdo you'll see on Claud. For instance, on the day of this meeting, she was wearing a red shirt with Mexican hats and cactus plants printed on it, and blue-and-white-striped pants held up by polka-dotted suspenders. On her head was what looked like an engineer's cap (it matched her pants), and dangling from her ears were miniature cowboy boots, which she'd made herself."

Take that, Cory Kennedy!

At the airport in LA, Jessi notes that Mr. Schafer is really patient, a trait she is able to observe because they had to wait for "about forty-five minutes" to claim their luggage. " (This is partially because Stacy and Claudia had packed so much.)" That joke's gettin' tired, army of ghostwriters. Just so you know.

And, Claudia's demure date outfit, which sounds too painfully ugly to imagine:

"Ordinarily I would have worn some wild combination of pants and high-topped sneakers and large jewelry. But for this evening I had borrowed a very tame dress from Dawn. I think it might have been a Laura Ashley dress. It was simple - a small-flowered print with half sleeves, a regular old waistline, and a nice lace collar. Then I had borrowed a pair of flat pink shoes from Mary Anne.

I looked like a nine-year-old. Or maybe a grandmother."

Yikes. Yeah ya did.

  1. I'm pretty sure Claud's first outfit is a lil racist.

  2. Haha, I would say racy, not racist...but lace collars? Dawn + Mary Anne does NOT = Claud!

  3. I'm surprised that Laura Ashley dress didn't burst into flames upon coming into contact with Claudia's skin.

  4. you may very well be my new idol. i just stumbled upon this blog because yeah, i was totally doing a search for BSC blogs because, yeah, i am that big of a loser.

ideas for a couple other blogs that could go along WITH this one: "stacey is a bitch" (she really is... how many times has she commented on how "sophisticated" she is? and she's always taking "pity" on the losers and feeling really proud of herself because of it) or maybe "kristy is a narcisist" because honestly how does she get away with some of the shit she does? how do any of the other girls tolerate her?!

wait, coming to think of it maybe a better blog idea would be one that goes through all of the mental/social/emotional issues they all have. for instance, mary anne and her crippling depression, abbey and her post-traumatic stress disorder, claudia's borderline retardation, etc...

  5. OMG, this is the greatest thing I've found all day. The movie came on, I went to wikipedia and obsessed for a little bit about how a girl like Mary Anne would have never hooked up with a guy like Logan for THAT long (and Logan is from LOUISVILLE and should not have a strong accent, not that M.A. would like it).
ANYWAY, I was blogging about all that and decided I needed a picture to go with it and found your blog through a google image search.
BEST random search result EVER. I like the above commenter's ideas too, lol. There should be a group blog...

  7. I *just* found your blog today, thanks to Feministing. And since I used to take copious notes on Claud's outfits as a preteen/teen reader of the series, I love your blog so much!

  8. Wow. I totally remember reading about the Mexican hat cactus outfit back in the day and thinking 'that is one awful outfit.'

  14. This blog rocks! I found it this morning and am reading it at work. Its been a bit of a struggle to find excuses for laughing out loud in my cubicle!

Also, did you know that Ann M. Martin was a pseudonym? I don't want to burst any bubbles, but the whole series was written by a guy.

    1. AMM wrote the first book (Kristy's Great Idea) and probably several of the earliest ones, as well. It's no big secret that much of the rest of the series was by ghostwriters; I doubt that they were all by the same guy--especially considering the number of books that came out in the regular series, Super Special series, Mystery series, Super Mystery series and portrait collection (e.g., 19 books came out in 1995 alone). Not feasible by one person.

  15. A guy? No way. I went to a book signing, and that was definitely a woman. I mean, I guess they could have staged that, but that just seems bizarre.

  16. OK, I think the first ensemble is too much, even for her (how did she escape from the psych ward?) but the second is way too little. A frumpy calico grandma dress on our Claud? Quel outrage.
