#62: Kristy and the Worst Kid Ever

"Claudia Kishi was under her bed. Only her purple-and-white striped stocking feet showed - sort of like when the house fell on the witch in The Wizard of Oz."

Good start to Chapter 2.

You know how I'm always talking shit, scoffing at sub-par Kishi concoctions and whatnot? Well, I have no complaints here: ". . . her eye for color and style shows in the way she dresses. It's always distinctive and funky. Today she was wearing purple-and-white-striped tights, Doc Martins [sic] (except she'd taken them off to sit on the bed), a short black ruffly skirt that looked like it was part of a women's Olympics figure-skater's costume, a purple cropped sweater with silver button covers on the back buttons, and a scrunchy black velvet hat decorated with purple and red velvet flowers."

You know, I have a skirt that sounds kind of like that, although it's just a short black cotton skirt with ruffles of layered lace - not so figure skate-y. I haven't quite figured out how to wear it yet.

Stacey wore: ". . . she had pulled her blonde permed hair back into a complicated braid threaded with green ribbon. The ribbon matched her shoes. She was wearing silver capri pants, an oversized shirt [surprise!] with a green belt [I still don't care for the over the shirt/extraneous belting, but that's just me], a green checked short skirt [over the capri pants? do they mean capri leggings?], and gold leaf-shaped earrings."

According to Kristy, she has a "New York sense of style". Of course she does. Whatever, I'm going out soon, I don't have time to harp on how utterly unsophisticated Stacey is, though I will point out that later she gets really excited about The Wizard of Oz when she sees it in the Kishi family video collection.

Babysittee Lou wore: ". . . her overalls under an enormous old sweater. The sweater had been patched at the elbows, and had definitely seen better days. Mary Anne wondered if maybe it had been Lou's brother's sweater, or maybe even her father's." Maybe Mary Anne should mind her own business.

Kristy's makeover: "Claudia had made a layer of little braids in my hair, which made my ears stick out. She'd given me raspberry colored eyelids and had put mascara on my eyelashes. I looked startled. My eyebrows had been brushed up, which made me look even more surprised - which I was.

I had blush on my cheeks, and glitter eyeshadow beneath my eyebrows and raspberry colored lips. And Claudia had painted little stars on my earlobes. As I put one finger up to touch my ear, she said, 'You really need earrings, Kristy.'

My big mouth that says things without thinking said, 'Eeek!'"

Babysittee Sari wore: ". . . one blue tennis shoe and one red one to match her red, white, and blue playsuit.) 'Very Claudia', Dawn told Sari approvingly. [Damn straight.] Sari completed her ensemble by grabbing her latest favorite toy, a plush green pickle with yellow felt eyes and a big red felt smile. (Personally, although Dawn is a vegetarian, she felt the pickle was sort of scary.)'"

That's hilarious. At least to me.

"'Hurray for the BSC of SMS!' cried Claudia.

'Claudia,' said Stacey. 'You're learning how to spell!'"

Harsh, Stace.

Promotion time!: I just set up a twitter account the other day. Between that and tumblr, I'm in microblogging/internet scrapbooking heaven. Oh, and while I [maybe] have your attention - buy Courtney's book and check out the first episode of yougotstahearthis. Okay, cool. Talk to ya later.

A Moment with Kim Toothpastefordinner: Finally, an explanation.

A Moment with Kim: Snake bracelets! Snake bracelets for everyone!

"So, Kim, what have you been up to in 2009?"
Oh, nothing much. Just chillin' with my SNAKE BRACELET. Note the Dawn Schafer wannabe hair. Refrain from commenting on the all-black ensemble.

Now, it's not the traditional C. Kishi snake bracelet - hers was of the wraparound variety. But this one has me written all over it and I've lusted after it just about forever. It's already become a staple piece in my jewelry collection. It rules. It inspires me to write haiku using BSC slang.

Dearest snake bracelet
You are totally acute
As well as distant

(That is beautiful, isn't it?)

From what my friend Kriti reports, this particular piece has been RTV'd (Return[ed] to Vender, for those of you lucky enough to have avoided the joys of a career in retail) by the Target corporation. (She actually got into an argument with one of their employees over why she couldn't buy it since they were just going to return it anyway. She is so sassy sometimes!) But don't fret! I've spent valuable minutes of my life (minutes I could have used for tasks of greater importance, like shoe shopping) searching the web -- mostly etsy, 'cause, you know, support independent designers and all that jazz -- to find Claudia-approved* snake bracelets.

As rings go, you're damn sexy
I long to wear you
